Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi police has taken an important initiative by starting regular school classes for the city’s transgender population.
The special classes are being conducted at the Islamia Higher Secondary School in Liaquat Bagh.
A spokesman for the Rawalpindi police said that such an initiative for the education of transgenders had been taken the first time in Pakistan.
The district administration and the education department also supported the school initiative of the police, the spokesman said, adding that initially, 52 transgenders were enrolled in the school.
The purpose of the school was to provide the basic right of education to transgender people, the police spokesperson said, adding that the Rawalpindi police had also established Pakistan’s first Transgender Protection Center.
The center has provided jobs and dignified employment to more than 100 transgenders, the spokesperson remarked.
The Rawalpindi police’s initiative to provide regular school classes for transgenders sets a commendable example for other institutions and communities in Pakistan. By promoting education and inclusivity, they are paving the way for a more just and equitable society where everyone, regardless of gender identity, has access to equal opportunities and a chance to thrive.
