UNIDO organizes successful meat processor competition

Peshawar, MAY 31 /DNA/ – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) successfully organized a meat processor competition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. The competition was held under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded Project for Agro-Food and Agro-Industry Development Assistance (PAFAID).

The Chief Guest, DG KP Food Safety & Halal Food Authority (KPFS&HFA) Mr. Muhammad Wasif Saeed, appreciated UNIDO’s efforts and congratulated the top performers. He highlighted the importance of adopting good hygiene practices to ensure food safety and public health. “Our aim is not to impose fines or enforce the adoption of best practices, but rather we are all committed to ensuring food safety and safeguarding public health,” said Mr. Saeed. “I am interested to see the impact of these cottage industry meat processors especially the increase in sale percentage and business expansion growth.”

UNIDO NPC Mr. Rehan Ali briefly explained the competition details, including the selection criteria, women’s participation, and milestones achieved. He also recognized the key counterparts who worked closely to promote food safety, hygiene, business licensing, marketing linkages, and product and technology development.

A total of 69 participants out of which 38 winners including 26 women and 12 men were awarded prizes latest equipment including Meat Mincing Machine, Food Chopper, Food Dehydrator, Mixing Machine, Digital Weighing balance, SS Trays, Deep freezer, SS Steamers, Insect Killer, Sealing Machine and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).

PAFAID is a four-year JICA-funded project being implemented by UNIDO in close coordination with the Government of Pakistan. It aims at improving pilot applications of compliance capacities and value-addition practices in the cattle meat value chain in KP province and the apple value chain in Balochistan province.
