Kaylia Nemour Wins Historic Olympic Gold for Algeria, and Africa

PARIS, AUG 6: Seventeen-year-old Kaylia Nemour won gold in the women’s uneven bars final at Paris 2024, making history as the first African to win an Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics.

Her victory earned Algeria its sixth Olympic gold since its debut in Tokyo in 1964.

Cape Verdean boxer David de Pina secured a bronze medal after losing his men’s 51kg semi-final bout against Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov by unanimous decision. Cameroon-born Cindy Ngamba ensured the Refugee Olympic Team’s first-ever medal by winning her women’s 75kg quarter-final in Paris. Nigeria advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s basketball competition with a 79-70 victory over Canada.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine placed fourth for a second Olympic Games in a row, coming in at 9.82 – a national record.
