Pakistan makes its oral argument on climate change at the International Court of Justice

ISLAMABAD: DEC 10 /DNA/ – The Attorney General of Pakistan, Mr. Mansoor Usman Awan, made an oral statement before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in The Hague today, in the case concerning Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of States regarding Climate Change.

Initiated as a follow up to a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly, the case seeks to render advisory opinion of the ICJ regarding the obligations of States in addressing the global challenge posed by climate change.

Pakistan’s presentation before the Court highlighted the country’s vulnerability to climate change. It underscored the need for international cooperation to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, based on the established principles of Equity and Common But Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC)

The ICJ’s advisory opinion is expected to provide valuable guidance to States on the issue of climate change. 

Pakistan’s participation in these proceedings demonstrates its strong commitment to continue working with the international community to address the challenge of climate change.
