ATTOCK, JAN 28 /DNA/ – General Secretary of Attock Press Club (Registered), senior journalist, and columnist Hafiz Shehzad Akhtar has stated that the PECA Act has been controversial from day one. Through its vague and oppressive black laws, this act is being used to suppress journalists, ordinary citizens, and those raising their voices on social media. He said that this law is equivalent to criminalizing criticism of the government, which is against the principles of a democratic state. No journalistic organization or institution supports or promotes fake news, and the government should develop the tolerance to accept criticism instead of targeting journalists. Instead, it should focus on improving its policies. This oppressive law has instilled fear among those expressing their opinions on print and social media. The threats of harsh punishments and fines are an attempt to limit freedom of expression. The law is being misused against political opponents and journalists critical of government policies, which amounts to abuse of power. We demand that the undemocratic and unconstitutional provisions of the PECA Act be immediately repealed, and legislation be introduced to protect press freedom and freedom of expression. This law not only curbs press freedom but also weakens the democratic foundations of Pakistan. We appeal to the journalist community and the public to raise their voices against this oppressive law and defend their rights.
