BRUSSELS: The European Union has announced nearly Rs350 million in emergency assistance to help people affected by the devastating flash floods in Pakistan, which have claimed hundreds of lives and left many more missing.
According to the EU, the aid will be delivered through trusted humanitarian partner organisations and will focus on providing life-saving health services, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) support to prevent the spread of disease, as well as cash assistance to help vulnerable families meet their basic needs.
Meanwhile, The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh alert for Islamabad and Punjab, warning of heavy rainfall over the next 12 to 24 hours.
According to the emergency response body, heavy showers are expected in Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Chiniot and Faisalabad.
The forecast also includes Sargodha and adjoining areas, along with Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal and Attock. In southern Punjab, rain is expected in Multan, Khanewal, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur.
The NDMA cautioned that the rainfall could worsen the situation in flood-affected areas of Punjab. Citizens have been advised to stay away from rivers, streams and nullahs, and to avoid unnecessary travel during the expected downpours.
