Israel agrees on extent of initial withdrawal from Gaza: Trump

WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump has said that Israel has agreed on the scope of the initial withdrawal from Gaza, and the US is working to advance the ceasefire plan.

In a recent statement, President Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is willing to end the bombing in Gaza. He expressed hope that the ceasefire plan would soon become a reality. He warned that if Hamas chooses to remain in power, it will be completely eliminated.

Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State said no one claims the issue is settled but expressed hope it will be resolved early this week. The US is close to an agreement ensuring Hamas holds no hostages. It will soon be clear whether Hamas is serious.

Senator Marco Rubio said Hamas has agreed in principle on post-war arrangements. He added that no government can be formed in Gaza by replacing three Hamas members in three days. He expects the ceasefire issue to be resolved shortly.

Earlier, an Israeli government spokesperson said the Israeli army might continue operations in Gaza for defensive purposes. The ceasefire has not yet been reached, but there has been a temporary pause in bombing.
