ISLAMABAD — The Defence Attaché Staff of the Federal Republic of Germany celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s Federal Armed Forces, at a dignified ceremony attended by diplomats, military officials and members of the Corps of Service Attachés.
The Bundeswehr, founded on 12 November 1955, marked seven decades of service, contribution and transformation. Speaking on the occasion, German Ambassador H.E. Ina Lepel highlighted the historical reasoning behind the establishment of the Bundeswehr in the post-war era and underscored its evolution as a modern force committed to peace, security and international cooperation.
Ambassador Lepel also reflected on the longstanding military ties between Germany and Pakistan, noting that bilateral defence cooperation began in 1967 with the establishment of the German Defence Attaché Staff in Rawalpindi. Since then, she said, both countries have maintained constructive and friendly military-to-military engagement.
The event was attended by Pakistan’s Military Flag and Staff Officers, foreign diplomats, and friends of the Defence Attaché Section.
A poignant moment of the ceremony came with a trumpet solo performed by Sapoy Mohammad Ishaq — facilitated by Pakistan Army Headquarters — who played the traditional German remembrance song “Der gute Kamerad” (The Good Comrade) to honour all soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The anniversary celebration highlighted not only the Bundeswehr’s history but also the enduring friendship and cooperation between Germany and Pakistan.
