US slams Canada over decision to open EV market to China

CANADA, JAN 17 /DNA/: As per the agreement, Canada will allow 49,000 EVs from China at a 6.1 percent tariff, equalling the tariffs on Canada’s most-favoured nations list. This also marks a shift from previous policy in which Canada imposed a 100 percent tariff on Chinese EVs following similar U.S. duties.

The development has raised alarm in the U.S. which fears that the agreement between Canada and China will allow China to expand its footprint in North America.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said, “I think they’ll look back at this decision and surely regret bringing Chinese cars into their market.”

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer called the Canadian decision “problematic”. However, he expressed optimism that a limited number of EV imports from China would not affect the American supply chain to Canada.

PM Carney said that he hopes China will lower tariffs on Canadian canola oil by March 1 from 85 percent to a combined tariff rate of 15 percent.
