MELBOURNE, Jan 19: Novak Djokovic started his Australian Open campaign with a dominant win. He defeated Spaniard Pedro Martínez 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round.
The Serb is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park. This victory also marked his 100th career match win at the Australian Open.
Pre-tournament concerns about his fitness were put to rest. Djokovic seized control early and never let his opponent find a rhythm.
On the women’s side, top seed Iga Swiatek faced a tough challenge. She battled past Chinese qualifier Yuan Yue 7-6(5), 6-3 in her opening match.
Swiatek was inconsistent and broken three times by the hard-hitting Yuan. However, her powerful backhand proved crucial in key moments.
She admitted to being “a bit rusty at the beginning.” Swiatek said she was happy to work through the ups and downs for the win.
Yuan called a medical timeout in the second set but fought hard. Swiatek eventually closed the match with a sizzling backhand return winner.
Djokovic’s performance served as a reminder of his threat. He joins contenders like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.
Swiatek will now face Czech player Marie Bouzkova. She continues her quest for a first Australian Open title and a career Grand Slam.
