T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka defeat Ireland by 20 runs

COLOMBO, FEB 9: Sri Lanka secured a 20-run victory over Ireland in their opening match of the T20 World Cup. Played in Colombo, Sri Lanka posted a total of 163 runs for the loss of six wickets. In response, the Irish team was bowled out for 143 runs. Harry Tector (40) and Ross Adair (34) were the only Irish batsmen to make significant contributions, while the rest of the batting lineup struggled.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s innings was bolstered by a quick-fire 44 off 19 balls by Chamika Karunaratne, alongside Kusal Mendis, who scored 56 runs off 43 balls, helping stabilize the team’s total.

For Ireland, George Dockrell and Barry McCarthy took two wickets each, while Gareth Delany and Mark Adair claimed one wicket apiece.

The victory gives Sri Lanka a strong start in the T20 World Cup, boosting their confidence for the upcoming matches.
