ISLAMABAD, MAR 1: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to postpone his upcoming official visit to Russia, following consultations amid the rapidly evolving regional and domestic security situation.

The visit to Russia, originally scheduled to commence on March 2, 2026, held significant importance for advancing bilateral relations between Pakistan and Russia. It was aimed at deepening cooperation in areas such as economic ties, trade opportunities, energy partnerships, and strategic dialogue.

However, in light of the extraordinary developments in the Middle East—including the recent US-Israel military strikes on Iran that began on February 28, 2026, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks on US-linked bases and allied sites in the Gulf region (including Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, and Kuwait)—the Prime Minister prioritized national security and regional stability.
A new date for the visit will be determined through mutual consultations with Russian authorities at an appropriate time. The government reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Russia while closely monitoring the unfolding crisis and advocating for de-escalation through diplomatic channels.
