ISLAMABAD, May 04: The Department of Mass Communication at Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), Islamabad, organized a “Freedom of Press” rally to mark World Press Freedom Day, underscoring the significance of independent and responsible journalism.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari led the rally, while Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Peshawar, Prof. Dr Safia, attended as the chief guest. Chairman of the department, Dr Faisal Javed, Departmental Coordinator, Assistant Professor Dr Sikandar Zareen, along with faculty members and a number of students, also participated in the rally.
In his remarks, Dr Shinwari described journalism as a crucial pillar of society that helps people differentiate between truth and falsehood.
He highlighted that the rise of social media has made responsible journalism even more essential, urging journalists to remain committed to truth and uphold their professional responsibilities in all circumstances.
Prof. Dr Safia lauded the students’ efforts, noting that such activities reflect their dedication and enthusiasm. She remarked that responsible journalism is a key pillar of society and that the rally demonstrated a bright future for the field.
Dr Faisal Javed said that the department continues to provide students with practical exposure to better prepare them for careers in the media industry.
Assistant Professor Dr Sikandar Zareen appreciated the students’ participation and thanked the distinguished guests.
Students from the Mass Communication Department also shared their views, stating that practical activities within the department help them better understand the media landscape and contribute to their academic, intellectual, and professional development.
