TANDO ADAM, Oct 4 (DNA): A blood donation camp was organised at the Shah Abdul Latif Municipal Library in Tando Adam by the Thalassaemia Patients Welfare Society, Nawabshah, Shaheed Benazirabad, with the support of MPA Paras Dero.
A large number of citizens attended the camp and donated blood for children suffering from thalassaemia.
Mohsin Ali, Field Manager of the Thalassaemia Centre Nawabshah, said around 300 blood bags were expected to be collected during the ongoing camp. He said 150 to 200 blood bags had been collected annually in Tando Adam in previous years, but the response from citizens this time had been particularly encouraging.
He said various screening tests were being conducted free of charge for blood donors, including tests for hepatitis, diabetes, HIV, malaria and haemoglobin levels. Such screening, he added, not only helped ensure the safety of donated blood but could also facilitate the early detection of certain health conditions.
Parents and relatives of children suffering from thalassaemia thanked the organisers and blood donors for arranging the camp. They said thalassaemia patients required regular blood transfusions and timely availability of blood was essential for continuing their treatment.
They appealed to philanthropists, young people and citizens to donate blood regularly and play their part in saving the lives of children suffering from the blood disorder. They said a healthy person’s blood donation could provide a lifeline to a child dependent on regular transfusions.
The camp organisers also appealed to citizens to donate blood in large numbers so that an adequate supply could be maintained for thalassaemia patients and others in need. They said blood donation was an important humanitarian service and every donation could help save a precious life.
