PIMS takes initiatives to improve patient care, modernize facilities

ISLAMABAD, Oct 11 (DNA):The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has launched a series of initiatives to improve patient care, modernize medical infrastructure, strengthen clinical services and expand postgraduate training programmes.

According to hospital sources, the initiatives focus on streamlining the procurement of medicines and essential medical equipment, clearing pending administrative matters and ensuring uninterrupted supplies to inpatient wards and outpatient departments (OPDs).

Surgical units are also being equipped with essential instruments, specialized sutures and other consumables to maintain smooth clinical operations.

Hospital sources said PIMS, with the support of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, was upgrading outdated electromedical equipment in several departments, including General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Renal Transplant Services and the Dialysis Unit.

They said tender documents for safety improvements and technical upgrades had advanced to the technical and financial evaluation stages.

As part of its academic expansion, the institution plans to introduce master’s degree programmes in Breast Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Minimal Access Surgery under the Department of General Surgery, affiliated with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU).

The plans also include establishing a dedicated Department of Thoracic Surgery with operating facilities and developing an independent Emergency Medicine Department to strengthen specialized and emergency healthcare services.

Hospital sources said structural rehabilitation and expansion of the Mother and Child Health (MCH) Centre were also being undertaken to increase bed capacity and provide dedicated operating suites.

Proposals are also being developed to introduce specialized services in Lifestyle Medicine, Endocrinology, Spine Surgery, Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery to address emerging healthcare needs.

To strengthen nursing leadership and clinical management, 30 nursing professionals have completed international certification in nursing leadership, patient safety and clinical management.

The hospital administration is also implementing the Federal Central Induction Policy to ensure transparent, merit-based selection of postgraduate trainees, house officers and nursing personnel through a structured academic committee.

Hospital sources said the initiatives were aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening clinical standards, expanding specialized medical education and ensuring better access to quality healthcare for patients.
