BEIJING: Tensions in the Middle East have intensified as the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran enters its fifth week, with fresh diplomatic backlash, concerns over civilian infrastructure damage, and signs of shifting global energy flows. Chinese Foreign Minister Condemns Strikes as Violation of International Law Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the US and Israeli strikes on Iran, launched without UN Security Council authorization while negotiations were ongoing, constitute a clear violation of international law. He made the remarks during a phone call with his Kuwaiti counterpart, emphasizing the need for an immediate cessation of military operations to prevent further escalation.
Chinese officials have repeatedly described the actions as “illegal military action” and the root cause of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, warning of broader regional spillover.
UN Secretary-General: World on the ‘Edge of a Wider War’UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned Thursday that the conflict risks spiraling out of control, stating: “We are on the edge of a wider war that would engulf the Middle East with dramatic impacts around the globe.” He called for an immediate halt to US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Iranian retaliatory attacks on neighbors, citing rising energy and food prices affecting vulnerable populations worldwide.
