Glenn Maxwell announces retirement

CANBERRA, JUN 2: Star Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket, ending a remarkable chapter that saw him play a key role in two World Cup victories.

The 36-year-old will continue to represent Australia in T20 internationals, with his sights set on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Maxwell, known for his explosive batting and dynamic all-round skills, played 149 ODIs after making his debut against Afghanistan in 2012. He scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and an astonishing strike rate of 126.70 — the second-highest in ODI history. His four centuries include an iconic unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, widely regarded as one of the greatest one-day innings of all time.

In addition to his batting, Maxwell claimed 77 wickets with his off-spin and was a standout fielder, taking 91 catches throughout his ODI career.

Injuries have affected Maxwell in recent years, prompting his decision to focus on the shorter format.

“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting,” Maxwell said on the Final Word Podcast. “I had a good chat with George Bailey and told him I didn’t see myself making it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for someone else to make that position their own.”

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg paid tribute to Maxwell, calling him “one of the most exciting and influential” ODI players in history. “Glenn’s ballistic batting lit up stadiums and inspired a generation,” he said.

Chair of Selectors George Bailey echoed the sentiment: “Glenn will be remembered as one of the game’s most dynamic players. His natural talent, energy in the field, and passion for Australia have been exceptional.”

Maxwell’s retirement marks the end of an era in Australian ODI cricket, but fans can still look forward to his fireworks in the T20 arena.
