Baqer Zolghadr appointed Iran's new security chief

Former Revolutionary Guards commander succeeds Ali Larijani

TEHRAN, MAR 25: Iran has appointed Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr as the new secretary of its Supreme National Security Council. According to Iranian media, he replaced Ali Larijani. Zolghadr is a former commander of the Revolutionary Guards and is known in strategic circles as a strict and influential figure.

Qatari news agencies reported that Iran has named a new secretary for its highest security body. The Iranian official news agency stated that Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr has been entrusted with this key position.

The appointment follows a major security crisis in which the former council secretary Ali Larijani and Basij force commander Gholamreza Soleimani were killed in recent attacks by the United States and Israel.

Ali Larijani was considered one of Iran’s leading political figures. He previously served as speaker of the parliament and headed nuclear negotiations with the West.

Israeli intelligence reportedly used extensive resources to track Ali Larijani, but he continually changed his location to avoid surveillance. He was eventually traced on the night between March 17 and 18.
