Burkina Faso and Niger reiterated on Tuesday its firm and unwavering support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, while welcoming the adoption by the UN Security Council of the historic resolution 2797 which enshrines, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom as a serious, credible and lasting basis for reaching a solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

This position was expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabe Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traore, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, during their meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of their participation in the Conference on the Victims of Terrorism in Africa, which is being held on December 2 and 3 in Rabat (Morocco).

Mr. Traore reaffirmed in this regard Burkina Faso’s support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, which constitutes the only credible and realistic solution for resolving this dispute. The Burkinabe foreign minister also welcomed Burkina Faso’s opening of a Consulate General in Dakhla on October 23, 2020.

On the sidelines of the meeting between Nasser Bourita and his Nigerien counterpart, M. Sangaré, Morocco and Niger signed a cooperation agreement on diplomatic training between the Moroccan Institute for Training, Research and Diplomatic Studies (IMFRED) and the National Institute for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies (INEDS) of Niger. The agreement, aims to provide Niger with a framework for benefiting from Morocco’s experience in diplomatic training. It seeks to support Niger’s National Institute for Diplomatic Studies (INEDS), which will soon open its doors, M. Sangaré emphasized during a press briefing.

Organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, with the support of UNOCT, the first Conference on African Victims of Terrorism is an unprecedented initiative that places African victims of terrorism at the heart of strategic debates on the prevention and fight against violent extremism. The Conference brings together representatives of African governments as well as associations of African victims of terrorism, researchers and specialized experts. The discussions focus on the essential role that survivors can play in prevention and resilience initiatives, through their testimonies, their experience and their participation in the reconstruction of affected communities.
