CEC estimates 40% turnout of voters in JS polls

DHAKA, JAN 7: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal estimated that 40% of voters cast their ballots in the 12th parliamentary polls on Sunday.

“Although we are not sure yet, on average the turnout was 40%,” he said at a press conference at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka this evening.

Earlier in a briefing, Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam said 27.15% of the votes were cast nationwide till 3pm.

About the general election, the CEC said the polls were held peacefully except for a few sporadic incidents.

“No major incident took place…no death occurred due to the election violence. Although there are allegations, we are looking into those.”

He added, “We will not claim that we performed well, but we tried hard.”

Voting in the general election began at 8am and ended at 4pm.
