Chairman Senate reaffirms Pakistan's commitment to eradicate poverty

ISLAMABAD, OCT 17 /DNA/ – Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, in his message on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to building a just, inclusive, and equitable society where every citizen can live with dignity and opportunity.

He said that the day, observed annually under the auspices of the United Nations, serves as a reminder of the global moral and humanitarian responsibility to end poverty in all its forms. Poverty, he noted, is not merely the absence of financial means, but the denial of fundamental human rights—including access to education, healthcare, decent housing, and justice.

Chairman Gilani highlighted that Pakistan’s Constitution and national ethos place a strong emphasis on the welfare of its people, particularly the marginalized and vulnerable segments of society. He noted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has historically been at the forefront of all major poverty alleviation efforts in the country.

He recalled that under the visionary leadership of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the PPP pioneered the concept of comprehensive social protection and pro-poor economic inclusion, which culminated in the establishment of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). Today, BISP stands as one of the largest and most effective social safety nets in South Asia, empowering millions of low-income families—especially women—through financial assistance, education stipends, and livelihood opportunities.

Chairman Gilani observed that this PPP-led initiative continues to transform lives and remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s fight against poverty. He also lauded the successive expansions and reforms of the programme that have improved transparency, outreach, and inclusivity, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.

Reaffirming the role of the Parliament  Chairman Gilani said that the Senate remains fully committed to strengthening social protection systems, advancing inclusive growth, and enacting policies that prioritize education, healthcare, job creation, and skill development the pillars of sustainable poverty eradication.

The Chairman concluded by calling on all stakeholders—government institutions, private sector, civil society, and international partners—to join hands in reaffirming their dedication to a poverty-free world, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
