OpenAI has launched a new Apps beta for ChatGPT, allowing users to connect popular third-party services directly within conversations.
The move signals a major step toward making ChatGPT a one-stop platform for everyday digital tasks.
ChatGPT’s new Apps beta functions as an in-platform app directory rather than a full-fledged app store. Users can now access connected services using simple prompts or the @ command during a conversation.
OpenAI says the goal is to let the chatbot suggest apps naturally and allow users to take action without switching platforms.
How apps work inside ChatGPT
Once an app is connected, ChatGPT can use it directly within a chat. For example, users can tap into Adobe Photoshop tools while generating images, even without an existing Photoshop account.
“Apps extend ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and letting users take actions,” OpenAI said in its announcement.
OpenAI has also opened the door for developers. The company introduced an Apps SDK, now in beta, allowing developers to build experiences designed specifically for chat-based interactions.
According to OpenAI, these tools bring both context and action directly into ChatGPT conversations.
Not App store — yet
Some commentators have compared the Apps beta to an app store. However, OpenAI currently describes it as an app directory rather than a direct competitor to Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
Still, in its “Looking Ahead” section, OpenAI noted that apps could eventually help developers reach users and monetize their work.

Products recommended by ChatGPT can be purchased directly via Target’s integration.
Users searching for housing can view listings, see photos, and even schedule tours through Zillow.
