Chief selector Inzamam ul Haq resigns from his position

The chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team, Inzamam-ul-Haq, resigned from his position on Monday. The decision came after news citing “conflict of interest” emerged on social media.

“People speak without research. Questions were raised on me so I decided that it was better I resign,” Inzamam said in a statement according to Geo News.

“If PCB wants to investigate me, I am available. People are talking [about me] without having any kind of proof, if there is any, then bring it. I have asked the PCB to do the same,” Inzamam maintained

“I have no connection with the player agent company, these types of accusations hurt me,” he added.

Inzamam further added that he will sit down with the PCB officials once the situation is back to normal.

“I was told on a phone call that a five-member committee has been created, so I told the board that as long as the investigation is going on, I better resign.

“When everything is back to normal and [the air has been clear], I will sit down with the PCB again.”

It was rumoured that Inzamam holds shares in a company owned by players’ agent Talha Rehmani.

This disclosure sparked concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest, given that Rehmani represents several of Pakistan’s leading cricketers, including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Furthermore, there are additional queries surrounding whether Inzamam’s dual role as both Chief Selector and a shareholder in a company that represents top cricketers might have an influence on player selection decisions.

It must be noted that Inzamam was appointed as the chief selector of the men’s national team on August 7 by the then-newly appointed head of the PCB Management Committee, Zaka Ashraf, after he assumed the role in July.

Before that, Inzamam served as chief selector from 2016 to 2019. His selected team won the Champions Trophy under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed in 2017.
