China welcomes Pak-Afghan ceasefire, praises Türkiye and Qatar’s mediation

Beijing, OCT 20: China has officially welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan, calling it a positive step toward regional peace and stability.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also commended Türkiye and Qatar for successfully mediating the deal and reaffirmed Beijing’s readiness to support the peace process between the two neighbouring countries.

China hails Pak-Afghan ceasefire as step toward stability
Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said both Pakistan and Afghanistan are “traditional, friendly neighbours of China” and will continue to remain important partners for regional cooperation.

“China welcomes the ceasefire between the two nations and commends the contributions of the relevant countries,” Guo said, referring to Türkiye and Qatar’s successful mediation efforts in the peace negotiations held in Doha.

Ceasefire agreement reached in Doha
Islamabad and Kabul reached an immediate ceasefire during weekend talks in Doha, which were mediated by Türkiye and Qatar following days of deadly border clashes that killed dozens. The clashes were the most severe since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in 2021.

Under the agreement, both sides pledged to halt hostilities and work toward establishing mechanisms for dialogue and conflict prevention. The next round of detailed peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan is scheduled to be held in Istanbul on October 25.

China’s call for dialogue and cooperation
Guo emphasized that China “hopes from the bottom of its heart” that Pakistan and Afghanistan will resolve their disputes through dialogue and consultation, fostering a lasting ceasefire that benefits both nations and the broader region.

“China stands ready to play a constructive role in the improvement and development of the two countries,” the spokesperson added, underlining Beijing’s commitment to regional harmony and peaceful coexistence.

China praises mediators for diplomatic success
The Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted the commendable role of the countries that facilitated the peace agreement, saying that the mediation efforts by Türkiye and Qatar were instrumental in achieving the breakthrough.

“Both countries will continue to cooperate for comprehensive and lasting peace in the region,” the ministry said, reaffirming China’s support for all initiatives aimed at stabilizing South Asia and promoting mutual trust among neighbouring states.
