ISLAMABAD, Dec 14 (DNA): The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Asif Saeed Khosa, said that the PIC riot – which took place between doctors and lawyers on Dec 11 – is a regrettable and condemnable act, and those who belong to the respected profession will go through the process of self-accountability.

Addressing a national conference, CJP Khosa said that the attack at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology should not have happened. He refrained from talking about the matter stating that is sub judice before the Lahore High Court (LHC).

Justice Khosa expressed sympathy towards the victims and affected families. “Both, lawyers and doctors, belong to a respected profession and people should be mindful of the values attached to legal as well as medical profession,” he added. He expressed hope that “better sense will prevail” not just in this particular incident and its aftermath but in the future as well.

On the other hand, he said that model courts are doing a remarkable job. “They have ensured speedy justice, and have created an impression that the verdict will be announced as soon as possible with continuous hearings,” he expressed, adding that they are receiving requests to shift their cases to model courts.

He went on to say that the number of cases have seen a progressive reduction around 25 per cent while no complaint has been received on the procedure of the model courts.

CJP Khosa asserted he has improved the process of justice during his tenure. He added: “No case has been adjourned in my bench, and good work must be encouraged”. “Irresponsible criticism surely discourages a person but enthusiasts never let it overhaul them,” he expressed, adding that only those bring a change in the system who are willing to take a risk.
