The medical experts highlighted that watermelon contains around 92 per cent water, aiding weight loss, with negligible calorie content and natural fibre that supports digestion.
However, watermelon has a high glycaemic index, which can elevate blood‑glucose and insulin levels. The medical experts said those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to restrict their intake to a single portion only.
It had been recommended to consume watermelon after a protein‑rich meal. Experts suggested to start with a piece of cheese, followed by the main meal, then the watermelon. This sequence can help reduce post‑meal spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels.
