ISLAMABAD, JUN 2: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has indefinitely adjourned the hearing on the delay of local bodies elections in Punjab.

Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, heading a five-member bench, remarked that even if the High Court overturns ECP’s orders, the commission will still issue appropriate directives.

Punjab’s Minister for Local Government, Zeeshan Rafiq, informed the bench that the local bodies law is yet to be passed and elections will be held immediately after legislation is completed.

He added that the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly has been requested to expedite the process.

The Chief Election Commissioner expressed dissatisfaction, stating that despite repeated opportunities and having the government in both the federal and provincial setups, elections were not conducted in Punjab.
