ECP seeks additional Rs25bln for general elections preparation

ISLAMABAD, NOV 28 (DNA) — In a bid to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming general elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday requested an additional Rs25 billion from the caretaker government led by Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar.

In this regard, the electoral watchdog will draft a formal letter to the Ministry of Finance, requesting the allocation of funds, and it will be dispatched promptly after the official announcement of the election schedule, underscoring the urgency of securing the necessary resources.

The earmarked funds are intended to cover essential expenses related to the election process, including the purchase of ballot paper, printing costs, and various other logistical requirements. Sources within the ECP said that the requested funds will be obtained in a phased manner to facilitate the seamless execution of election-related tasks.

This phased approach ensures that financial resources are utilized judiciously and in alignment with the evolving needs of the electoral process. To kickstart the preparations, the Ministry of Finance has already released Rs10 billion to the Election Commission.

This initial contribution underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the electoral body in its mission to organize credible and inclusive general elections. As part of the ongoing preparations, the Election Commission has approved the final list of constituencies and initiated the printing process.

The eagerly awaited final list is scheduled to be released on Thursday, November 30, providing voters and stakeholders with a clear overview of the electoral landscape. Prior to finalising the constituencies, the Election Commission diligently addressed objections submitted for 1324 constituencies across 109 districts of the country.

The objection resolution process took place from November 1 to November 22, ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral system. — DNA
