Ex-top envoy to Moscow appointed again as ambassador to Russia

SEOUL: Former South Korean Ambassador to Russia Lee Sok-bae was formally appointed as the top envoy to Moscow again Wednesday, three years after he left the post, the foreign ministry said.

Lee, who previously served as ambassador to Russia from 2019 to 2022, is a seasoned diplomat who holds expertise in Russia-related affairs.

Lee served various roles in South Korea’s diplomatic missions in Russia prior to his first stint as ambassador, including consul-general in Vladivostok. He is fluent in Russian, having served as an interpreter in a past summit.

Meanwhile, the ministry also appointed Shin Hyung-sik, director of the Institute for Popular Sovereignty, as ambassador to the Holy See.
