Authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan have declared the Darkot Glacier in Yasin area of Ghizer district dangerous, warning that it may break at any time due to rapidly rising temperatures.
An alert has been issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Emergency Service, urging both locals and tourists to exercise caution.
Glacier at risk due to soaring temperatures
According to officials, the temperature around the Darkot Glacier in Yasin has reached 35 degrees Celsius, putting immense pressure on the ice mass. The sudden rise in heat has significantly increased the risk of a glacier outburst, which could trigger flash floods in nearby areas.
Safety measures ordered by authorities
The district administration has been directed to immediately move residents of low-lying areas to safer locations. Authorities have also advised tourists and locals to avoid visiting or camping near the banks of the Ghizer River, which is likely to swell in case of a glacier burst.
