ISLAMABAD:  The Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani has intensified his efforts to clinch the top position of the caretaker prime minister. His name, as reports suggest, has been proposed by the Opposition leader Raja Riaz Ahmed. In order to muster support Sanjrani has already met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and on August 10, 2023 he met with the PDM leader Maulana Fazal ur Rehman.

The sources familiar with this situation maintain the viewpoint that both the PML-N and PPP harbor reservations about the potential elevation of Sanjrani to the esteemed position. This reluctance stems from their perception that managing him could prove challenging, given his perceived proximity to the Establishment.

The PPP has proposed names of two brothers Tassadaq Hussain Jillani the former Chief Judge of the Supreme Court and Jalil Abbas Jillani the former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan. The sole “drawback” associated with them is their nomination by a particular political party; aside from this aspect, they seem to be exceptionally suitable candidates for this position.

The PML-N remains inclined towards the notion of Ishaq Dar assuming the role of caretaker prime minister, as this would serve to secure its influence over governmental affairs. Nevertheless, the prospects of Dar ascending to the position of Prime Minister appear rather dim, considering the substantial backlash that greeted this proposition a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, it is worth acknowledging that Pakistan’s history is punctuated by unexpected turnarounds, underscoring the nation’s propensity for surprises.

Hafeez Shaikh, the former Finance Minister in the PTI government, has consistently demonstrated his proficiency and dedication in handling economic matters, not only during his tenure in PTI but also in other governments. His track record as a capable economist and financial expert sets him apart as a strong candidate for leadership roles in economic policy. One of the significant factors contributing to Hafeez Shaikh’s credibility is his strong rapport with international financial institutions such as the IMF. His strong affiliation with the Establishment further underscores his suitability as a candidate. Nevertheless, an obstacle arises as both the PML-N and the PPP express reluctance towards endorsing him for the role of caretaker prime minister.

The MQM has put forward Kamran Tesori, the incumbent Sindh Governor, as their proposed candidate. The ongoing power struggle among different stakeholders could potentially create an opportunity for an unexpected candidate to emerge, often referred to as a “dark horse,” adding an element of surprise for everyone involved.

The Prime Minister and Raja Riaz are scheduled to meet once more today, with hopes of making significant progress. Raja Riaz has expressed optimism that a breakthrough might be on the horizon. However, should these talks not result in a consensus, the issue will be escalated to the Election Commission. The Commission will then be tasked with reaching a decision within a span of three days.

In such an event, there is a possibility that Shehbaz Sharif could take the lead in overseeing the August 14 celebrations as the Prime Minister.
