Brussels: Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Mohsin Naqvi held an important meeting in Brussels with the European Union Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner. The meeting focused on preventing illegal immigration, strengthening action against human smuggling, and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Commissioner Magnus Brunner paid strong tribute to the Government of Pakistan for achieving a 47% reduction in attempts to reach Europe through illegal “dunki” routes during the past year and described Pakistan’s measures as exemplary. He said he would soon visit Pakistan to acknowledge Pakistan’s efforts in curbing illegal immigration and to hold direct consultations on the way forward.
Mohsin Naqvi stated that 1,770 human smugglers and their agents have been arrested in Pakistan this year, which clearly reflects the government’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal immigration.
Both sides agreed to further strengthen joint and coordinated strategies against illegal immigration, human smuggling, and drug trafficking. They also agreed to enhance all possible cooperation, including the exchange of information.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan is playing a leading role at the global level against human smuggling and narcotics control. He stressed that the nexus between smugglers, drug mafias, and terrorists poses a grave challenge to every country and that close international cooperation is essential to confront it.
Both sides expressed their resolve that Pakistan and the European Union would continue to work together in the future against illegal immigration and human smuggling.
