WASHINGTON, MAY 16: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has raised fresh concerns over Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, saying Tehran is now dangerously close to developing nuclear weapons.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio stressed that preventing Iran from acquiring such capabilities is a top priority for the United States.
“Iran is very close to developing nuclear weapons,” Rubio warned. “We must stop it at all costs. Hopefully, this can be achieved through peaceful negotiations.”
Rubio emphasised that diplomatic engagement remains the preferred path forward. “There could be no better time for a nuclear deal with Iran,” he said, suggesting that current regional dynamics offer a unique window of opportunity for renewed dialogue.
According to the secretary of state, President Trump has placed securing a nuclear deal with Iran at the top of his foreign policy agenda. “This is one of the president’s main priorities,” Rubio noted, adding that Trump expressed optimism about the potential for a breakthrough during his recent visit to the Middle East.
Rubio reiterated that Washington remains committed to using every possible tool — preferably peaceful means — to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed state.
