Islamabad: The Supreme Court has directed the government to immediately transfer former Prime Minister Imran Khan from jail to a hospital for medical treatment. The decision came after reports of deteriorating health conditions and growing concerns over his well-being in custody.
The court issued the order following a petition filed by Khan’s legal team, which argued that his health required urgent medical attention and that he should be treated in a proper medical facility rather than a prison cell. The bench emphasized that every citizen, regardless of status, is entitled to medical care under the law and instructed authorities to ensure his safety and dignity during the transfer.
Government representatives assured the court that arrangements would be made promptly, and a medical board would oversee Khan’s treatment. The court further directed that the board submit a detailed health report within a week to monitor his recovery and ensure transparency in the process.
Supporters of Imran Khan welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a step toward justice and humane treatment. Meanwhile, political analysts noted that the development could have significant implications for the ongoing political climate, as Khan remains a central figure in Pakistan’s opposition landscape.
The Daily Islamabad Post banner highlighting the court’s directive has drawn nationwide attention, with citizens expressing mixed reactions on social media. Many urged the government to uphold the court’s order swiftly and avoid any delay that could endanger Khan’s health.
This ruling underscores the judiciary’s role in safeguarding fundamental rights and ensuring accountability in high-profile cases. As the government prepares to implement the court’s directive, all eyes remain on how swiftly and transparently the transfer will be carried out.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan in February this year had rejected /returned a petition seeking the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan to a  hospital for medical treatment, citing procedural objections and clarifying that the matter had already faced dismissal the previous day.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi presided over the hearing where senior lawyers Sardar Latif Khosa and Naeem Panjotha represented the petitioner. The plea, filed under relevant rules in connection with ongoing cases, urged immediate shifting of the incarcerated former prime minister to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for specialised eye care.
