Deputy President William Ruto has nominated interior minister Kithure Kindiki to be his new deputy, following the Senate’s impeachment vote against his previous deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
Kindiki had previously been considered for the role in 2022 but was eventually passed over by President Ruto when he chose Gachagua as his running mate.
Gachagua became the first Deputy President under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution to be impeached. He was found guilty of “gross violations” of the constitution, as well as threatening judges and engaging in ethnically divisive politics, but not of corruption and money laundering. Gachagua denied all allegations.
Parliament must now vote on Kindiki’s appointment within 60 days.
