LAHORE, JULY 2 (DNA):Punjab senior minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology (JIC) Lahore has not been renamed after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, quashing speculations amid outcry on social media.

“The name ‘Jinnah Institute of Cardiology Lahore’ remains ‘Jinnah Institute of Cardiology Lahore’ and no changes are under consideration,” Aurangzeb wrote in a post on X.

“Funding in the Punjab government’s Annual Development Programme for the fiscal year 2025-26 has been allocated under the name ‘Jinnah Institute of Cardiology.'”

This controversy stems from remarks made by Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a session of the Punjab Assembly last Saturday regarding the cardiovascular institute.

During the session, the Punjab chief minister said: “The Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases will be an extension of the PIC. It is in the final stage of completion.”

She also presented images of the project as she discussed the plan.

This, followed by Punjab Health Minister Khwaja Salman Rafique saying the hospital was named Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiac on the resolution of the Board of Governors (BoG) of Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, was interpreted by many as an indication that institute was being renamed.

However, in her post on X, Aurangzeb clarified this confusion, saying:  “Fourteen new hospitals will be established in the Nawaz Sharif Medical District for world-class advanced treatment of heart diseases and other ailments, with their master planning nearing completion. It is requested to report the news after verifying the facts.”

The senior minister further urged journalists to verify facts before publishing any news in the future.
