International Coffee Day is back in full swing, providing an excellent opportunity to celebrate our shared affection for coffee while also acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices of those behind this beloved brew.
This year’s theme spotlights a crucial cause: raising awareness and advocating for the “right to a safe and healthy working environment in the coffee supply chain.”
International Coffee Day is a global gathering that unites coffee aficionados, businesses, and consumers to revel in their love for coffee while also spotlighting its impact on sustainable development.
In Laos, the sixth edition of International Coffee Day will be observed in Vientiane from September 29 to October 1 and in Luang Prabang from October 27 to October 29.
International Coffee Day 2023 in Laos has several key objectives: fostering and energising the Lao coffee enthusiasts’ community, representing the entire Lao coffee supply chain, championing environmentally responsible growth through coffee, facilitating cross-sectoral dialogues and solutions, and attracting the attention of tourists.
These events receive support from the Project to Reinforce the Commercial Capacity of Coffee (PRCC) in Northern Laos. PRCC, a partnership between the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Agence Française de Developpement (AFD), is dedicated to strengthening the coffee industry and advancing sustainable development principles in Laos.
The European Union (EU) has joined hands with AFD to sponsor International Coffee Day, emphasising its growing backing for the Lao coffee sector. The focus extends across the coffee value chain, encompassing production, consumption, and exports, all with the aim of improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers and labourers while preserving the environment.
In addition to AFD and the EU, these events in Laos receive support from a consortium of development partners in the public and private sectors. Hosted by the Vientiane Centre shopping mall and the Luang Prabang Chamber of Commerce and Industry, they enjoy the collective backing of organisations such as the International Trade Centre, the UK Trade Partnerships Programme, the United States Department of Agriculture, Winrock International, the International Labour Organisation, Oxfam, and CARE International in Laos.
Noteworthy local entities, including the Lao Coffee Association, Lao Coffee Culture (a network of coffee enthusiasts), the Bolaven Plateau Coffee Producers Cooperative, and Coffee-Fix, have also played pivotal roles in providing support.
Attendees can anticipate a delightful journey through the rich flavours and captivating aromas of high-quality Lao coffee, as well as valuable insights from interactive sessions and engaging panel discussions. These events will facilitate meaningful connections within the coffee community.
Furthermore, the spotlight will be on ethical and sustainable practices, fostering a deeper appreciation for the role of coffee in Laos’ ongoing development efforts.
