Pakistan, Azerbaijan  vow to deepen defence relations

Rawalpindi, 13 August 2025 — Colonel General Karim Valiyev, First Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of the General Staff of the Azerbaijan Army, called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

The two military leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, with a special focus on the evolving global and regional security environment. COAS reaffirmed Pakistan’s deep-rooted fraternal ties with Azerbaijan and expressed the resolve to further strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the defence and security domains. He also congratulated Colonel General Valiyev on the successful conclusion of the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, terming it a significant milestone for regional stability.

Colonel General Valiyev lauded the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces and their achievements in Maarka-e-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos. He conveyed his best wishes on Pakistan’s upcoming Independence Day and Azerbaijan’s Victory Day celebrations. COAS thanked Azerbaijan’s leadership and people for their solidarity during Maarka-e-Haq and for sending an Azeri contingent to participate in the Independence Day parade.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening defence cooperation, enhancing military-to-military exchanges, and working together for peace and stability in the region.

In a special ceremony, Colonel General Valiyev conferred upon Field Marshal Asim Munir Azerbaijan’s prestigious Patriotic War Medal for “Services in the Field of Military Cooperation,” on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev. The award recognised COAS’s exceptional contributions to fostering Azerbaijan–Pakistan military relations. Colonel General Valiyev also commended Pakistan’s unwavering efforts in counterterrorism and expressed Azerbaijan’s determination to further enhance collaboration in defence and security.
