Pakistan raises serious concerns on terrorism at Tehran regional meeting

ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN, DEC 14: A significant meeting of neighbouring countries of Afghanistan and Russian special representatives was held in Tehran, where the Pakistani delegation raised serious concerns regarding terrorism and underlined the grave threats posed to Pakistan.

According to details surfaced on Sunday, the Pakistani representation at the Tehran meeting was led by Muhammad Sadiq, Special Representative for Afghanistan. The delegation included Pakistan’s ambassadors in Tehran and Kabul, Mudassir Tipu and Ubaid Ur Rehman Nizamani.

The meeting was inaugurated by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, with a keynote address. According to sources, the Pakistani delegation stated that stability in Afghanistan serves the interests of the entire region. Islamabad is committed to promoting peace, development, and lasting security in the region.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baqai said during a press conference that Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions would also severely affect Iran. Both the countries share common borders with Iran.

Ismail Baqai added that Iran respects the Taliban regime’s decision not to attend the Tehran conference but noted that such regional forums can promote mutual understanding and dialogue. They may prove helpful in resolving issues between Afghanistan and neighbouring countries.

The Pakistani special representative for Afghanistan also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on high-level relations between Pakistan and Iran. Muhammad Sadiq and Abbas Araghchi met in Tehran on the sidelines of the conference.

Abbas Araghchi expressed Iran’s resolve to further expand bilateral relations with Pakistan. The Iranian foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and stability in the region. Muhammad Sadiq thanked Iran for hosting the meeting and expressed hope that it would play an effective role in fostering peace, stability, and development in the region.
