Parents of slain doctor accuse Kolkata police of evidence tampering

KOLKATA: The grieving parents of a young female doctor, who was brutally murdered after being sexually assaulted in a Kolkata hospital, have come forward with serious allegations against the police, accusing them of bias and attempting to destroy evidence in the case.

According to Indian media reports, the victim’s parents revealed that they received little support from the police from the very beginning. “If it weren’t for the doctors going on strike and the voices raised on social media, the police might have closed the case long ago,” they said.

The parents claimed that instead of helping them seek justice, the police pressured them to withdraw from the case, even offering them money to do so.

The victim’s mother, speaking at a protest, vowed that the demonstrations would continue until justice was served for her daughter. “This fight is not just for my daughter, but for every girl in this country,” she said, urging the public to join them in their demand for justice.

The victim’s father also appealed to the citizens, asking them to participate in the protests in large numbers. “Justice is not easy, but with the people’s support, it is possible,” he emphasized.

The police have detained a suspect, Sanjay Rai, who is a police volunteer. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed that this was not a case of gang rape as initially feared, but that Rai acted alone in the heinous crime.

The family’s allegations have sparked outrage, with many questioning the integrity of the police and the government’s role in protecting its citizens. The case has highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by victims of sexual violence in India and the challenges in securing justice.
