ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday described Iran as a “true friend of Pakistan” and vowed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in multiple sectors including trade, energy, security, and regional peace. He made these remarks during a joint press stakeout alongside Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian following the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

The two leaders engaged in wide-ranging discussions on mutual interests, regional challenges, and the way forward in building lasting peace and prosperity. The Prime Minister lauded Iran’s principled stance on international issues, particularly its unwavering support for the oppressed people of Gaza and Kashmir.

Condemning Israeli aggression in Gaza, Prime Minister Shehbaz said, “The world must open its eyes to the genocide taking place in Gaza. Innocent children, women, and civilians are being killed. Pakistan stands firmly with the Palestinian people in this time of crisis.” He appreciated Iran’s strong voice against Israeli atrocities, saying Iran’s support on Palestine reflects its moral clarity and commitment to justice.

On the ongoing situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the Prime Minister said Pakistan will never remain silent over the suffering of the Kashmiri people. “We highly value Iran’s consistent support for the Kashmir cause and acknowledge its strong position against Indian atrocities,” he added.

Shehbaz Sharif also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology. “Iran has every right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Pakistan supports Iran on this issue at international forums,” he stated, adding that cooperation and dialogue must prevail over confrontation.

Echoing these sentiments, Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian said, “Unity is strength. The Muslim world must unite to overcome the challenges it faces.” Quoting Allama Iqbal, he highlighted the importance of solidarity among Muslim nations and expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its consistent support against Israeli aggression.

Dr. Pezeshkian emphasized the need for greater regional connectivity and proposed enhancing rail and trade links between Iran and Pakistan. “Stronger transport and economic ties will benefit both our peoples,” he said. He also suggested the launch of new infrastructure and energy projects to further integrate the two economies.

Security cooperation remained a key part of the dialogue, with both leaders pledging to intensify efforts to eliminate terrorism. “Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations must be eradicated. Both countries will coordinate more closely, especially in securing our shared border,” stated Prime Minister Shehbaz.

President Pezeshkian echoed the commitment to border security and peace, noting that the safety of citizens and stability of the region must remain a top priority.

The visit, marked by warmth and mutual respect, reflected the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and religious ties between Pakistan and Iran. Both leaders concluded the press briefing with a commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, energy, culture, and regional peace efforts.
