ISLAMABAD: In a bold move to revolutionize youth sports development in Pakistan, the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP), in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), has partnered with Lahore Qalandars to officially launch the Prime Minister’s Cricket Talent Hunt Programme—a nationwide initiative aimed at identifying and nurturing the next generation of cricket stars.

The signing ceremony and official launch were held at the Press Information Department (PID) Islamabad, in the presence of PMYP Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana, and team captain Shaheen Shah Afridi. The initiative marks a significant step forward in the government’s broader mission to promote youth inclusion in sports, alongside efforts in education, employment, and digital access.

Speaking at the event, Chairman PMYP Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan noted that this cricket initiative follows the successful launch of the national Boxing Talent Hunt and reflects the government’s commitment to expanding sports opportunities across the country. He announced that open trials will be held in 25 cities, beginning in Quetta on June 26–27, with a special focus on reaching underrepresented regions.

Calling the programme a transformative step, he stressed that it will provide a level playing field for both boys and girls and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to rebuild Pakistan’s sports infrastructure through merit-based and transparent initiatives.

Rana Mashhood further praised the media for consistently supporting youth initiatives, fostering national unity, and presenting a positive image of Pakistan worldwide. He stated that the successful hosting of PSL X was seen globally, reinforcing the country’s ability to stage world-class sporting events.

Acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, he remarked, “The budget is tough, but we are committed to making Pakistan self-reliant.” He added that youth development remains a top priority for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with the aim of providing quality opportunities in both education and sports.

Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana highlighted the franchise’s decade-long commitment to grassroots development, describing the partnership with PMYP as a historic opportunity to expand their successful model nationwide. He noted that national players like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf were discovered through similar open trials. He also cited Lahore Qalandars’ success in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), including three championship titles in four seasons.

Atif Rana also announced that the PSL trophy will tour the UK and USA, showcasing Pakistan’s cricketing achievements and promoting the country’s image as a safe and thriving sporting nation. He recalled moments of international solidarity, when diplomats and journalists wore Qalandars shirts at Gaddafi Stadium, reinforcing global trust in Pakistan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi expressed optimism about the programme, stating that it will play a key role in discovering and developing top cricketing talent across the nation. He also urged patience regarding the national team’s recent changes, saying that with time, everything will settle and improve.
