BUCHAREST, MAY 27 (DNA) : Romania’s new President Nicusor Dan said at his swearing-in ceremony in parliament that the country needs major changes within the law, promising to listen to the people and work with society.
Dan thanked Romanians, at home and abroad for their interest in the country’s future and urged them to keep pushing for reforms in state institutions.
He said Romania faces a budget deficit because the state spends more than it can afford. Dan stressed the need for a stable government and fiscal reforms to protect financial stability and attract investment.
The president called on all political parties to work together for Romania’s future, focusing on national interest, not politics.
He outlined key reforms: cutting bureaucracy, digitalizing public services, improving civil service promotion, and reforming local administration and elections.
On the economy, Dan said Romania must fight tax evasion, manage state companies better, support agriculture, simplify access to European funds, and create a good environment for investors.
In healthcare, he wants digital records, better balance between care levels, more addiction treatment centers, and incentives for rural doctors.
For education, Dan called for better pay for teachers, encouraging critical thinking, linking education to jobs, investing in early childhood and preventing dropouts.
He stressed judicial reforms to speed up cases, focus on major corruption, and improve magistrate promotions.
Environmental reforms include improving authorization processes, expanding enforcement, reforming forestry management, and better urban planning and waste management.
In culture, Dan plans a national program to increase access and support contemporary Romanian culture and heritage.
He also wants to simplify pensions, reform social benefits, develop community social services and long-term care, support women’s access to work, and fight domestic violence.
On foreign policy, Dan highlighted strengthening ties with the USA, NATO, and the EU, reducing energy and tech dependencies, boosting defense spending, and supporting Moldova’s European path.
He also promised better support for Romanians abroad, improving consular services, promoting Romanian language teaching, and ensuring diaspora representation in Parliament.
