Specialist calls for stronger understanding of Autism

ISLAMABAD, 10 JUN (DNA) — A specialist on Wednesday underlined the significance of understanding the dietary and everyday living challenges faced by Autistic adults, stating that informed awareness can improve well-being and long-term health outcomes while also recommending calm surroundings and reduced sensory overload at home.

While speaking to a local media outlet, pediatrician Dr. Abraham Yousaf explained that autism can be influenced by genetic factors or environmental developmental conditions, noting that both biological and external influences may play a role in early brain development. He added that awareness about these contributing factors is important for early recognition and timely support.

He further stated that excessive virtual screen time and a noisy, overstimulating home environment can negatively affect a child’s behavior and stress levels, potentially contributing to increased anxiety and related health concerns such as hypertension. He also emphasized the importance of raising awareness among parents and caregivers about creating calm, structured, and supportive environments for children, along with balanced routines, to promote healthier development and overall well-being.

He also suggested including camel milk in their diet as a source of nutritional support.

Specialist advised parents to maintain a balanced and healthy diet for children, emphasizing the importance of reducing sugary foods and processed items that may negatively affect energy levels and behavior. He further recommended avoiding excessive junk food and ensuring regular meals with fresh fruits, vegetables and nutrient-rich foods to support overall growth and development.

He also highlighted that proper dietary habits, combined with a calm and structured environment, can play an important role in improving well-being and supporting healthier lifestyle patterns in children. He also noted that only eating a narrow selection of foods can limit the intake of crucial nutrients and vitamins needed for a balanced diet. In Pakistan, autism is often misunderstood and sometimes dismissed as a behavioural issue or attributed to poor parenting. He noted that such misconceptions can delay proper diagnosis and support for affected children.

He emphasized that early recognition and timely intervention can significantly improve a child’s development, communication skills, and overall quality of life, making early awareness and access to care extremely important.   He concluded by stating that awareness creates acceptance and greater understanding in society is essential to ensure better support, inclusion, and opportunities for individuals with autism. â€” DNA
