Syrian diplomatic source denies reports of plans to deploy troops to Yemen

Damascus, NOV 7: A Syrian diplomatic source on Saturday denied reports that Syrian troops would be deployed to Yemen, saying that the reports were baseless.

Furthermore, the source told the Syria’s state-news agency SANA that military cooperation between Syria and Saudi Arabia currently focuses on training, the exchange of expertise and military consultations.

Moreover, it said that military cooperation with Saudi Arabia could develop into a mutual defense agreement or Syria joining the Mecca Defense Agreement.

The repudiation followed Yemeni officials telling Agence France-Presse (AFP) that thousands of Syrian soldiers would be deployed to Yemen, adding that some had already arrived.

Three military sources and a defense official, who requested anonymity, said hundreds of Syrian soldiers were already present along the Yemeni border.

A source in the Presidential Leadership Council and another in the Defense Ministry also said that thousands more would be deployed to help fight the Houthis, according to AFP.
