OpenAI has rolled out new personalization options for ChatGPT, enabling users to directly control the chatbot’s enthusiasm, warmth, and emoji usage.
The update is aimed at giving users greater influence over how the AI communicates.
According to a social media post from OpenAI, users can now adjust specific characteristics of ChatGPT’s responses. These include warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji use, offering more granular control over the chatbot’s tone.
The settings are available in ChatGPT’s Personalization menu. Each option can be set to More, Less, or Default, depending on user preference.
Beyond tone: Formatting options added
In addition to emotional tone, OpenAI has also introduced similar controls for ChatGPT’s use of headers and lists. This allows users to decide how structured or conversational they want responses to be.
These updates build on existing customization tools, including the ability to set a “base style and tone.”
OpenAI previously added predefined tones such as Professional, Candid, and Quirky in November. The new controls work alongside these options, giving users even finer adjustments on top of their chosen base style.
Experts say this layered approach allows ChatGPT to better adapt to different use cases, from formal work tasks to casual conversations.
ChatGPT’s tone has been a recurring issue for OpenAI this year. At one point, the company rolled back an update after users complained the chatbot had become “too sycophant-y.”
Later, OpenAI adjusted GPT-5 to be “warmer and friendlier” following feedback that the model felt colder and less engaging.
