ANKARA —  President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to begin immediate negotiations toward a ceasefire and a potential end to the war, following a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a statement, Trump described the conversation as highly productive, stating, “The tone and spirit were excellent. Russia and Ukraine will now move forward with talks to stop this catastrophic bloodbath.” He emphasized that the conditions for peace would be determined solely by Moscow and Kyiv, as they possess critical details unknown to outside parties.

Trump also revealed that he informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and Finland of the development. Notably, he mentioned the Vatican’s interest in hosting negotiations, with Pope Francis offering to facilitate the process.

Trump highlighted Russia’s desire for large-scale trade with the U.S. post-war, calling its economic potential “unlimited.” He also framed Ukraine’s reconstruction as an opportunity for prosperity through international trade.

While Trump’s announcement suggests a major diplomatic breakthrough, skepticism remains. Previous ceasefire attempts have collapsed, and Ukraine has long insisted on territorial sovereignty—a key sticking point. Neither the Kremlin nor Kyiv has yet independently confirmed Trump’s claims.

World leaders are likely to respond cautiously. The U.S. State Department, under President [current administration], has not commented, but European officials may seek clarity given Trump’s unofficial role.

If confirmed, Vatican-mediated talks could mark a historic shift. However, with trust in short supply, the path to lasting peace remains uncertain.
