An impressive ceremony was held today at the National Museum of Cambodia to mark the official handover and unveiling of a replica of the iconic ‘Fasting Buddha’ from the Gandhara civilization, a gift from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The event, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, was attended by high-ranking Cambodian government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.
Ambassador of Pakistan Zaheeruddin Babar Thaheem presented the revered artifact to Her Excellency Ms. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The handover formalizes the replica’s placement within the museum’s esteemed collection, symbolizing a new chapter in cultural diplomacy between the two nations.
In her remarks, Her Excellency Minister Phoeurng Sackona characterized the gift as a powerful symbol of shared heritage, friendship, and faith, which elegantly links Cambodia’s profound Buddhist traditions with the ancient Gandhara civilization of Pakistan.
“Cambodia deeply values its friendship with Pakistan, a relationship strengthened by our common vision of peace, prosperity, and regional understanding,” stated Minister Sackona. “This act of cultural exchange reflects the true spirit of diplomacy, where friendship is nurtured not only through political and economic cooperation but also through the sharing of cultural values, spiritual traditions, and human aspirations.”
Echoing these sentiments, Ambassador Thaheem highlighted the profound significance of the sculpture. He noted that this exquisite work of art reflects the rich tapestry of a shared Buddhist heritage and symbolizes the enduring bonds of friendship and goodwill between the peoples of Pakistan and Cambodia.
