ISLAMABAD, NOV 8 /DNA/ – As Azerbaijan marks the sixth anniversary of Victory Day, the occasion stands as a powerful reminder of one of the most significant chapters in the country’s modern history. The 44-day Patriotic War of 2020 not only restored Azerbaijan’s control over territories that had remained under Armenian occupation for decades, but also reaffirmed the determination, courage, and unity of the Azerbaijani nation.

On November 8, 2020, Azerbaijan achieved a landmark victory that reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus. The liberation of the strategically important city of Shusha became the defining moment of the conflict and paved the way for the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. For Azerbaijanis across the world, Victory Day symbolizes sacrifice, resilience, and national pride.

The success of the military campaign was made possible through the exceptional bravery of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, whose soldiers fought with unwavering dedication on the battlefield. Facing difficult terrain and heavily fortified positions, Azerbaijani troops demonstrated professionalism, discipline, and determination throughout the conflict. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for what many in Azerbaijan regard as the restoration of historical justice.

At the forefront of this effort was President Ilham Aliyev, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Under his leadership, Azerbaijan pursued a strategy that combined military preparedness, diplomatic engagement, and national unity. President Aliyev played a central role in steering the country through the conflict and maintaining public morale during the 44-day campaign. For many Azerbaijanis, his leadership during the war remains a defining feature of the nation’s victory.

The Patriotic War also highlighted the importance of international partnerships. Among Azerbaijan’s closest friends during the conflict were Türkiye and Pakistan, both of which expressed strong political and diplomatic support for Azerbaijan’s position. Their solidarity was widely appreciated by the Azerbaijani people and government.

Türkiye’s support reflected the deep-rooted ties between Ankara and Baku, often described through the slogan, “One nation, two states.” The close cooperation between the two brotherly countries received renewed attention during the conflict, further strengthening an already robust strategic partnership.

Pakistan, meanwhile, stood firmly alongside Azerbaijan throughout the war. The Pakistani government repeatedly voiced its support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. This position resonated strongly with the Azerbaijani public, who viewed Pakistan as a steadfast friend in times of challenge.

The support extended by Pakistan during the conflict brought the peoples of the two countries even closer together. Already linked through strong diplomatic relations, shared values, and mutual respect, Azerbaijan and Pakistan witnessed a further strengthening of their brotherly bond during and after the war.

In the years since the victory, cooperation between Baku and Islamabad has expanded across multiple sectors, including defence, trade, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges. High-level visits, joint military cooperation, and growing economic engagement have reinforced the strategic partnership between the two nations. Public goodwill has also flourished, with citizens of both countries often expressing admiration and solidarity with one another.

For Azerbaijan, Victory Day is not merely a celebration of military success. It is also a tribute to the servicemen who gave their lives, the veterans who returned from the battlefield, and the families who endured tremendous hardships during the conflict. It serves as a reminder that peace, stability, and development are built upon sacrifice and perseverance.

Six years after the historic triumph, Azerbaijan continues to commemorate the courage of its armed forces and the unity of its people. As the nation celebrates Victory Day, it also honours the enduring friendships that stood by it during a defining moment in its history. Among those friendships, the brotherly relationship between Azerbaijan and Pakistan remains a shining example of solidarity, mutual respect, and unwavering support.
