ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of the Republic of Korea on Science and Technology Dr. Sung-Chul Shin was the keynote speaker at a Science Diplomacy event hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 27 June 2024. The event was attended by Federal Secretary for Science and Technology Mr. Ali Tahir, Federal Secretary for Federal Education and Professional Training Mr. Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and eminent scientists from several universities.

Welcoming the participants, Additional Foreign Secretary for Policy Planning Ambassador Israr Ahmed emphasized the importance of science diplomacy and cooperation between Pakistan and the Republic of Korea in the domain of Science and Technology.

In his keynote address, Dr. Shin presented the policies employed by the Republic of Korea in planning and promoting scientific research and innovation. He also explained how these strategies have contributed to Korea’s remarkable economic transformation, elevating the economic status country from a developing to a developed nation.

 The talk was followed by a focused dialogue among scientists, researchers, and policymakers with Dr. Sung-Chul Shin. Secretary Science and Technology Mr. Ali Tahir expressed Pakistan’s keen desire to enhance collaboration between Pakistan and the Republic of Korea. He also underlined Pakistan’s policies of promoting scientific education and research by providing opportunities, resources, and support to scientists to encourage research and innovation.

Scientists and researchers from the Air University, Bahria University, COMSATS, Fatima Jinnah Women University, GIKI, Institute of Space Technology, NUST, Pakistan Institute of Engineering Sciences, QAU and UET Taxila participated in the interactive session. They presented the cutting-edge scientific research being conducted at their institutions. They also discussed methods to establish effective communication channels between policymakers and the scientific community to leverage science for development through collaborative efforts among universities, scholars, and students.

Ambassador Shin was invited to Pakistan from 24-27 June 2024 by the invitation of Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote scientific exchanges between Pakistan and the Republic of Korea. During his visit to Pakistan, Ambassador Shin called on the Foreign Secretary Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi. He also visited the National Center for Physics, Quaid-e-Azam University and National Center for Physics, National University for Science and Technology and met with the alumni of scientific universities in the Republic of Korea.
